Discussing ‘The Magic Flute’ Costume Designs with CCM Professor Dean Mogle

CCM Professor of Costume Design Dean Mogle recently gave CCM Public Information Assistant and Arts Administration student Sara Kissinger a behind-the-scenes tour of the costume shop, which is in full swing in these last crucial weeks before the opening of The Magic Flute. Sara Kissinger: Dean, thank you so much for inviting me to visit the shop today. The Magic Flute is an iconic work in opera repertoire – have you designed for this show before?

Dean Mogle: I have not designed a production of Flute before. The last time CCM did Flute was the 1986-87 season, before I joined the faculty.

SK: Did you have a specific concept for your design?

DM: There were two major influences on the design. The first is the 18^th century influence, which is a nod back to when Mozart wrote the opera. This is the Queen of the Night’s world. It’s midnight: there are a lot of blues and everything is deep and dark and rich. The second influence is a sort of modified Egyptian style, which is Sarastro’s world. The costumes are warm colors – gold and bronze.

CCM’s Kurt Weill Festival resumes this month with the Mainstage Series production of Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera (running Feb. 28 – March 10). This spring’s festival events will also include concert performances of Weill’s Kiddush (Prayer of Sanctification) and the a capella madrigal “Ho, Billy, O!” from the Weill musical Love Life. ‘Examiner’ Interviews CCM Alumna Joélle Harvey

The Examiner‘s Elijah Ho interviews soprano Joélle Harvey (BM ’07, MM ’09) in anticipation of the CCM alumna’s performance of Handel’s Messiah with choral director Ragnar Bohlin and the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus Dec. 13 – 15.

A native of Bolivar, New York, Harvey is the recipient of a 2011 First Prize Award from the Gerda Lissner Foundation, a 2009 Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Foundation and a 2010 Encouragement Award (in honor of Norma Newton) from the George London Foundation.

While at CCM, Harvey performed the roles of Amor in Cavalli’s L’Egisto, Emmie and Flora in, respectively, Britten’s Albert Herring and The Turn of the Screw, Poppea in The Coronation of Poppea, Sophie in Massenet’s Werther, and Nannetta in Falstaff. She continues to study with CCM Professor of Voice Karen Lykes.

CCM Presents Fit Factor Workshop In Conjunction With Performing and Visual Arts College Fair Tomorrow

Want to learn which music school is the best “fit” for your college education? Come learn from the experts! CCM presents “The Fit Factor Workshop” held on UC’s campus in room 400 of the Tangeman University Center tomorrow (Oct. 9) from 5:45 – 6:30 p.m.

This discussion will feature presentations by several admission representatives, including those from CCM, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University,New England Conservatory and Oberlin Conservatory.

UC Hosts Performing and Visual Arts College Fair on Oct. 9

The University of Cincinnati welcomes the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and its Cincinnati Performing and Visual Arts College Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The fair runs from 7–9 p.m. in the Great Hall at Tangeman University Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

College-bound high school students interested in pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies in the areas of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, graphic design and other related disciplines are encouraged to attend this informational event.

CCM will also be hosting “Choosing the Right Music School for You – The Fit Factor Workshop,” a special panel discussion, from 5:45–6:30 p.m. in room 400 of the Tangeman University Center. This discussion will feature presentations by several admission representatives, including those from CCM, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, New England Conservatory and Oberlin Conservatory. Students and parents attending the NACAC fair are invited to participate in this discussion.

Discussing ‘Into the Woods’ Wigs and Make-Up with Student Designer Kaitlyn Adams

Into the Woods Wig & Make-Up Designer Kaitlyn Adams recently sat down with CCM Public Information Assistant and Arts Administration student Jenifer Thomas to discuss the work that went into this monumental production. Kaitlyn is handling wig and make-up design for this production alongside CCM faculty member Kelly Yurko.

Jenifer Thomas: Hi Kaitie! Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Kaitlyn Adams: I’m a Senior from Cincinnati. I went to high school at Seton on the West side.

JT: Local girl, huh? So what got you into wigs and make-up?

KA: My mom is actually a wig master and make-up artist, so I’ve grown up with it.

JT: And why’d you choose CCM?

KA: There are only two schools in the country that teach wigs and make-up. The other school focuses primarily on wigs and make-up for film, and that wasn’t where I was interested. I want to do stage work.

JT: So when you found out you were assigned to design Into the Woods, what did you do?
