CCM Winds, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Guitar And More On Display This Weekend!

At 8 p.m. this evening (Friday, April 12), the CCM Wind Orchestra closes out its successful 2012-13 season with a survey of contemporary American composers. The eclectic program will include works by Samuel Barber, Warren Benson and more! Learn more about this performance here.

CCM welcomes acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee to the stage at 8 p.m. this Saturday, April 13, for an encore performance of the program from his recent Carnegie Hall debut. Brownlee will be accompanied by composer, conductor and pianist Damien Sneed for this special performance. Learn more about this performance here.

CCM’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band will celebrate the impact of adjunct instructor of jazz drums and “living guru of big band drumming” John Von Ohlen with a swinging tribute concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. Learn more about this performance here.

CCM Wind Orchestra Celebrates Contemporary American Music on April 12

CCM’s Wind Orchestra presents a historical survey of significant contemporary American composers at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 12, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

The eclectic program will include music by American composers with a variety of backgrounds:

  • Samuel Barber (1910-1981), Pulitzer Prize winner known for, among other works, his wildly popular Adagio for Strings.
  • German-born Ingolf Dahl (1912-1970), who settled in Los Angeles and was a conductor, critic and pianist, playing for Hollywood films and working with artists such as Victor Borge and Benny Goodman.
  • Warren Benson (1924-2005), known for his dynamic works for percussion and winds, who was a professional musician by age 14 and who went on to play timpani in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
  • Michael Daugherty (b.1954), Professor of Composition at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance whose often-performed works are influenced by popular culture, Romanticism and Postmodernism.

CCM Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price conducts this performance, which closes out the Wind Orchestra’s 2012-13 concert series.

CCM Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Kick-Off Tour with Celebratory Concert on March 14

CCM’s Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble present an evening of exciting works beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

This celebratory concert kicks off a multi-state tour for the Wind Orchestra that will culminate with an opening night performance at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) National Conference in North Carolina.

In a program aptly subtitled “International Excursions,” CCM’s wind ensembles are purposefully reaching beyond the U.S. and England to feature works from other diverse world cultures. Led by Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price, the Wind Orchestra will explore styles ranging from Mexican folk melodies to a tone poem inspired by a missions trip to Cambodia. The Wind Ensemble, led by Associate Director of Wind Studies Terence Milligan, will present works by Berlioz and Williams.

CCM hosts a musical celebration during the annual Prism Concert!

CCM presents its 16th annual Prism Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. This perennially popular concert features performances by CCM’s jazz, vocal, brass choir, percussion and wind ensembles.

The Bearcat Bands Drumline, a horn and harp duo, a piano soloist and the CCM Preparatory Department’s Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble will also be featured during this concert’s 60 minutes of nonstop music. Glenn D. Price and Terence Milligan conduct.

Keep the chill away by surrounding yourself with warm sounds from various locations in Corbett Auditorium! This year’s theme, “From Fanfares to Festivities,” promises to be exciting from start to finish with iconic music honoring events and celebrations.

CCM’s Wind Orchestra presents exciting new works by contemporary Chinese and Japanese composers at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

Dubbed “Asia Rising,” this concert celebrates the dynamic new sounds for winds and percussion coming from Japan and China. Led by Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price, the Wind Orchestra will explore the music of composers Youichi Kamioka, Chen Yi, Masanori Taruya and Yasuhide Ito. The colors of Asia will mix with the “best of the West” to create a delectable Asian fusion for the senses during this special concert.Tickets are on sale now.

CCM Announces Spring 2013 Calendar of Major Events

CCM's Spring 2013 Calendar of Events.

CCM is delighted to announce its spring schedule of performances. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM presents more than 100 major public performances from Jan. 12 through May 19, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported opera, drama and musical theatre productions.

CCM’s spring semester performance schedule includes the return of Cincinnati’s premiere fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 18, an evening of motion-picture music featuring acclaimed film composer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman on Jan. 27, a celebration of Giuseppe Verdi’s sacred masterwork Requiem on Feb. 1 and 2, a monumental “Mahler Marathon” on March 2, the Ariel String Quartet’s inaugural season finale on April 9, a guest artist recital by acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee on April 13 and the eighth installment of CCM’s popular Pianopalooza concert on April 21.

Also this spring, CCM’s Division of Electronic Media presents the 10-part Global Lens Film Series (Jan. 14 – April 15), Cincinnati Children’s Choir celebrates its 20th anniversary (March 9), the Classical Guitar Department celebrates its 40th anniversary (April 6) and CCM’s year-long Kurt Weill Festival continues with a variety of unique concerts and productions (Feb. 28 – March 12).

The CCM Wind Orchestra will present a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of Frederick Fennel’s founding of the modern wind ensemble at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium under the direction of Glenn D. Price. This performance will also feature guest ensemble Xavier University Symphonic Winds, under the direction of CCM alumnus Matthew Westgate.

CCM’s Wind Orchestra explores the works of contemporary Latin composers at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. Under the direction of conductor Glenn D. Price, the program “Latin Landscapes” will feature a variety of works and several U.S. premieres.

The concert also offers audiences a sneak-peek at music that will be featured on the CCM Wind Orchestra’s upcoming CD, scheduled to be released in 2013.
