CET Cincinnati Public Television Broadcasts Premiere of ‘Monteverdi From CCM’ on May 12

CET Cincinnati Public Television will premiere Monteverdi from CCM at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, on the CET Arts channel. This program is part of an exciting new collaboration between CCM and CET, which will bring CCM’s world-class performances to PBS viewers throughout the Greater Cincinnati viewing area.

Monteverdi from CCM was shot on location in CCM Village in November of 2012. The performance features CCM’s Chamber Choir, Early Music faculty members, students and guest artists presenting highlights from Claudio Monteverdi’s Madrigals of Love and War and Selva Morale e Spirituale.

CCM Student Marie Bucoy-Calavan Named As Inaugural May Festival Choral Conducting Fellow

Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been named the inaugural recipient of the May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship. She will enter her third year of studies in CCM’s DMA in Choral Conducting program this fall.

We are delighted to report that DMA candidate Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been named the inaugural recipient of the May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship. This new position was established thanks to the incredible foresight and generosity of Ginger Warner and was created as part of an ongoing collaboration between the May Festival and CCM’s Department of Choral Studies. Each year, a May Festival Fellow will be selected from CCM’s pool of Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting students and will serve as the Assistant Conductor of the May Festival Chorus.

“The new May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship provides unique professional training for CCM’s doctoral choral conducting students,” explains Director of Choral Studies Earl Rivers, “providing them opportunities to conduct rehearsals, as well as to attend May Festival Board and Artistic Planning meetings to learn how a world-renowned Choral Festival is successfully produced.”

Bucoy-Calavan will begin her duties with the May Festival Chorus next fall. As Assistant Director she will be responsible for running select rehearsals and smaller sectional rehearsals. In addition Bucoy-Calavan will conduct some concerts within the community. Commenting on her appointment, Bucoy-Calavan says, “I am very excited and honored at the chance to have a mentorship with [May Festival Director of Choruses] Robert Porco. I attended the Conducting Masterclass that the May Festival held a year ago, and was inspired by his musical insights and skill for teaching conducting. I look forward to the fall and to the prospect of working with the May Festival Chorus.”

CCM Drama, Dance, Choral, Piano, Musical Theatre And More On Display This Weekend!

CCM’s stars of tomorrow will be shining bright in a wide variety of concerts and productions running this weekend!

CCM’s 2012-13 Studio Series concludes with a production of Emily Mann’s powerful docu-drama Execution of Justice, running through April 20 in UC’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. CCM Ensembles Join with Xavier University Concert Choir and Cincinnati Children’s Choir to Perform Britten’s ‘Spring Symphony’

CCM’s Chorale and Concert Orchestra join forces with the Xavier University Concert Choir and Bel Canto Choir of the Cincinnati Children’s Choir for a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Spring Symphony and other works at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. The program will also include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis for string orchestra and Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South. Tickets are on sale now.

Britten’s Spring Symphony, Op. 44, was commissioned and dedicated to Serge Koussevitsky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which shared the 1949 premiere with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in July (in Amsterdam) and August (with the BSO at Tanglewood). This choral symphony was written just four years after Britten’s widely acclaimed Peter Grimes opera when the composer was 35.

UC Choruses and Special Guest Choirs Present Rescheduled Spring Concert on April 17

CCM presents the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Cabaret Singers in concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. Olga Artemova, Michael Fuchs, Steven Berlanga and Sarah Baker conduct. This concert was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Special guests for the concert include the Cincinnati Children’s Choir (CCC) Girl Choir and the Little Miami Select Women’s Chorale and Select Mixed Choir. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of composer Benjamin Britten’s birth, the CCC Girl Choir and the UC Women’s Choir will perform his Missa Brevis in D, Op. 63.

Repertoire for the Men’s Chorus will include a commissioned work titled Victory! by Joshua Chai, Director of Choral Studies at Concordia University in Austin, scored for men’s chorus, brass quintet and percussion. This performance will also feature CCM’s Brass Without Borders ensemble.

CCM Spring 2013 Calendar of Major Events – April and May Updates

Please note the following corrections and updates to CCM’s schedule of major events for the spring:

• CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (April 4 – 7) will be directed by Steven Goldstein.

• The UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Cabaret Singers concert originally scheduled for March 6 (and cancelled due to last Wednesday’s inclement weather) has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

• CCM’s Preparatory Department will present the Cincinnati Junior Strings’ Spring Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, in the Muntz Theater at UC Blue Ash. This concert is free and open to the general public.

Cincinnati Children’s Choir Celebrates 20th Anniversary with March 9 Concert

CCM is proud to present the Cincinnati Children’s Choir‘s 20th anniversary concert at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, in Corbett Auditorium.

This special event performance will celebrate 20 years of choral artistry and education by the Cincinnati Children’s Choir (CCC). More than 300 young voices will take part, joined by special guest Cincinnati Collaborative Ringing Project. The concert will feature works commissioned to celebrate the CCC’s anniversary in addition to classical, folk and world music repertoire.

CCM Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Verdi’s Birth With Performances of ‘Requiem’

CCM’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Chamber Choir and Chorale will present a rare two-evening run of Giuseppi Verdi’s Requiem at 8 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now.

CCM mounts these performances in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth, which will be Oct. 10, 2013. Huge choral and orchestral forces come together for this highlight of the 2013 CCM Orchestra Series, with choirs prepared by Earl Rivers, director of Choral Studies, and Brett Scott, Choral Studies faculty member, as well as performances led by Maestro Mark Gibson, director of Orchestral Studies and of the CCM Philharmonia.

Soloists for both performances include:

• CCM alumna Helen Lyons, soprano, who most recently returned to sing the title role in CCM’s acclaimed 2011 concert performance of Puccini’s Turandot;
• Leah de Gruyl, mezzo soprano, who sang Mother Goose in CCM’s Mainstage production of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress in 2012;
• CCM alumnus Daniel Weeks, tenor, who was both a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Competition.
• Andrew Funk, bass, who recently performed with Opera Lyra Ottawa, San Francisco Opera, Opera Boston, Arizona Opera and Chicago Opera Theater.
• Yi Li, tenor, a winner of the CCM 2012 Opera Scholarship Competition and Musical America’s “New Artist of the Month” for March 2012;
• Nathan Stark, bass, who recently served as a cover in Britten’s Billy Budd at the Metropolitan Opera.
