CCM Alumnus Randy Edelman Receives 2014 BMI Spotlight Award

Distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman (CCM ’69, HonDoc ’04) was recently honored alongside other top composers at the 2014 BMI Film/TV Awards, which were held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on May 14, 2014.

Edelman, who has composed for films including The Last of the MohicansGods and GeneralsWhile You Were Sleeping and The Mask, received the BMI Spotlight Award in recognition of the use of his theme for The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. in games of the Olympiads spanning nearly two decades. In 2003 Edelman received BMI’s highest honor, the Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement. Founded in 1939, BMI is now the largest music rights organization in the US. Operating on a non-profit-making basis, the organization still nurtures new talent and new music.

Last January, Edelman returned to the stage of Corbett Auditorium for a special performance with CCM’s Philharmonia and Jazz Ensemble. Learn more about his recent return to campus courtesy of UC Magazine.

We are thrilled to announce that CCM class of 2013 MFA Lighting Design student Alan Hanson has won the 2013 Student Lighting Design Competition organized by online entertainment lighting industry publication iSquint and theatre art and technology journal Stage Directions!

Hanson’s lighting design for CCM’s Fall 2012 Mainstage Series production of Chess took the title in this third annual competition, which offers a valuable prize package of lighting software and literature.

The Student Lighting Design Competition is sponsored by lighting technology companies City Theatrical, Nemetschek Vectorworks and Field Template Soft Symbols, and is judged by leading experts in the lighting design field and developers of the software entrants must use to create their design entries. Experience a taste of Tinseltown at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music this Sunday! CCM’s Philharmonia Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble bring classic film music to life, joined by singer/songwriter, Hollywood film composer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman (CCM ’69, UC HonDoc ’04)! CCM Celebrates Film Music With Special Concert on Jan. 27!

CCM presents a special treat for fans of film music this Sunday, as the acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble go to the movies for the evening, celebrating the sounds of the cinema in UC’s Corbett Auditorium!

The Jan. 27 program will open with selections from classic film scores such as A Streetcar Named Desire before moving on to the work of singer/songwriter, arranger, film scorer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman (CCM ’69, HonDoc ’04)!

The Jan. 27 concert will also include Edelman’s symphonic piece Transcontinental: A Mad Musical Dash Across the USA, which was premiered by the Cincinnati Pops several years ago and which will be dedicated to the loving memory of Maestro Erich Kunzel.

CCM Goes to the Movies with Acclaimed Film Composer and Distinguished UC Alumnus Randy Edelman on Jan. 27

CCM welcomes distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman (CCM ’69, HonDoc ’04) back to Corbett Auditorium for one unforgettable evening beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27. A prominent singer, songwriter, arranger and film scorer, Edelman will bring his film scores to life during this special event concert featuring CCM’s acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble.

As a singer/songwriter, Edelman has recorded dozens of solo albums and has toured with popular music acts like the Carpenters and Frank Zappa. His pop songs have been covered by major recording artists including Barry Manilow (“Weekend in New England”) and Olivia Newton-John (“If Love is Real”).

Edelman has also composed over 100 scores for television and film. He wrote the theme to, and scored many episodes of television’s MacGyver and scored dozens of major motion pictures, including The Last of the Mohicans, Gettysburg and DragonHeart. CCM’s Philharmonia and Jazz Ensemble will present these and other works during the Jan. 27 concert event. Edelman, Mark Gibson and Scott Belck conduct.

CCM’s ‘Chess’ Receives Four League of Cincinnati Theater Nominations

CCM’s production of Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice’s Chess has earned four nominations from the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT)! The LCT also distinguished the rock musical as a recommended production: Outstanding Production (musical), Ensemble, Lead Actor (Julian Decker) and Lead Actress (Aubrey Ireland). Congratulations to the entire creative team!

Loosely based on the lives of chess grandmasters Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov, Chess involves a romantic triangle between two top players (an American and a Russian) and the woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.

In her review of Chess for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jackie Demaline writes, “It’s easy to be swept up in the spectacle conjured by director Aubrey Berg – great singing, great dancing, jaw-dropping costuming, superb orchestral support (led by Stephen Goers), sharp techno scenic design (by Mark Halpin and Alan Hanson).”
